How the two differ in practice

The difference is not feature-by-feature, it is where the product sits. PagerDuty was built as the layer that decides who gets woken up and what happens if they do not answer, and it was deliberately indifferent to what generated the alert. Datadog On-Call was built next to the data, and it is deliberately not indifferent.

That shows up at the moment somebody is paged. A PagerDuty notification carries whatever the upstream monitor put in the payload, so the responder acknowledges on their phone and then goes somewhere else to find out what is happening. A Datadog page arrives in the product that already holds the metric, the trace and the log line, so the first click is the investigation rather than a context switch.

It also shows up in what happens when you change monitoring vendors, which most organisations do at least once. PagerDuty is unaffected: the schedules, escalation policies and years of incident history are in a product that never cared which tool fired the alert. Datadog On-Call is not portable in that way, and the schedules and policies are part of what you would be leaving.

The pricing models differ in kind rather than degree. PagerDuty publishes per-user tiers and then sells AIOps, status pages and live call routing separately, so the list price is knowable in advance and the real price depends on which add-ons you need. Datadog does not publish On-Call pricing at all, and Bits AI SRE is consumption-based, which means the bill scales with how many investigations run rather than with headcount.

Where each one is stronger

PagerDuty is stronger wherever the estate is heterogeneous or the organisation is large enough that response is a discipline rather than a rota. Escalation policies, overrides, live call routing and the surrounding process tooling are more developed than anything shipped by a monitoring vendor as an adjacent product, and the fifteen-year install base means the integration you need almost certainly exists. It is also the safer choice when procurement cares about concentration risk, because it is the piece that does not have to move when something else does.

Datadog On-Call is stronger for teams already standardised on Datadog, and the argument is about friction rather than features. There is no alert payload to map, no integration to maintain, and no gap between being paged and seeing the evidence. The honest limit on each is the mirror of its strength. Ask one question first: is your monitoring vendor a settled decision for the next three years? If it is not settled, or if you run more than one observability tool, PagerDuty is the layer that survives the churn and that is worth paying for on its own.

Then separate paging from investigation, because the two get conflated in evaluations and they are priced separately by both vendors. How alert triage works and how it is measured sets out what the paging layer is actually accountable for, which is getting the right person to acknowledge quickly, not explaining the failure.

If explaining the failure is the real problem, neither of these is the product you are shopping for, and the tools that investigate rather than page covers that field including where each option is blind. Buying a better pager will not reduce the time spent working out what broke.

Finally, price the add-ons before comparing headline numbers. PagerDuty at 21 US dollars per user is not the configuration most teams end up on once AIOps and status pages are included, and Datadog's consumption pricing means the number depends on incident volume rather than on how many people you employ.
